The announcement by East Stroudsburg University this week to become test optional moves the number of colleges not requiring an ACT or SAT to above 860. The complete list can be found at FairTest.org.

While not submitting test scores may benefit many college applicants, there are a few things to know about test optional colleges. Some test-optional colleges still require test scores from:

  • out of state applicants
  • students below a specified GPA
  • those seeking scholarships from the college
  • those seeking to be admitted to particular majors or programs (such as an Honors program)
Some colleges will accept AP scores, SAT Subject test scores or IB in place of SAT's or ACT's. Read the fine print or contact the college admissions office directly if you have questions about their testing policy.
