"Have you started writing your college essays?"
"You know your application needs to be in by November 1. Did you write your essay?"
"When are you going to get your essays written?"

Are you beginning to sound like a broken record when it comes to talking to your high school senior about their college applications? Tis the season for procrastination. Most students who have not yet started their essays are really just stuck and unsure where to start. Here are four tips to get things moving:
  1. Don't focus on the question, rather focus first on what you want a college to know about you. The essay prompt is secondary.
  2. Don't worry about being boring or having nothing to write about. It's all in the details, dahling!
  3. Remember that application readers are people too. They want to learn more about you, and your essay is the best way for you to help them do that.
  4. Just start writing. Don't worry about a beginning, a middle or a conclusion- that can all be worked out later. Just start with words and keep writing as it all comes together.
A well written college admission essay can take 8-10 hours of time. Students often underestimate the number of individual essays they will need to write to apply to their colleges. Start early so there is enough time to write strong essays that show a college who you are and why they should accept you!
